Our guests are Cinde Weatherby, Voting and Election Law Issues Chair for the League of Women Voters Texas and Anthony Gutierrez, Executive Director of Common Cause Texas. Among the topics of discussion will be the vote by mail (VBM) petitions and lawsuits that have been circulating through the Texas and Federal court systems since April. We also talk about how election officials in Travis, and other counties in Texas, are preparing to keep voters and poll workers safe during the July 14th runoff elections and beyond during the rapidly worsening pandemic throughout the state. And we hear how these grassroots organizations plan to possibly tackle the issue of gerrymandering here in Texas prior to the next round of redistricting slated to take place during the 2021 legislative session. Hosted by Michelle Manning-Scott.

We will discuss Texas prisons during the time of COVID-19. We’ll also hear about visitation policies and how some family members lose their visitation rights arbitrarily, and in many cases for no stated reason. Finally, we’ll learn about how the state dismantled its Office of Minority Health Statistics and Engagement (originally called the Center for Elimination of Disproportionality and Disparities), which could have proved very useful during the current pandemic.

Our guest this week on Civil Rights and Wrongs is Charlotte Moore, author and film producer. Her film “Black Bodies” is now playing (on-demand) at Alamo Drafthouse, and features the stories of sixteen Black people from Austin. It is billed as “a raw, bare-bones, no-frills exploration into what it means to exist in the world as a Black person today.” Charlotte also talks about her recent essay in Austin Monthly magazine titled, “It’s Time to Take a Long Look in the Mirror, Austin.” Commenting on the recent protests, Charlotte observes: “Our cities and our country are on fire — a blaze of systemic racism that has been stoked in Austin and beyond for centuries.” Join Bob Dailey and regular guest, Jim Harrington, founder of the Texas Civil Rights Project, and head of Proyecto Santiago at St. James Episcopal Church. We will also hear from Austin Sanders, staff writer for the Austin Chronicle, regarding the June 11 meeting of the Austin City Council. Council approved a series of resolutions that constitute a package of police reforms, not the least of which is a comprehensive reallocation of funds to social services and criminal justice diversion programs.
